Architectural Design II
Project
2
Project 2 was addition to an existing
order, an addition to an existing order first requires
that the ordering system of the prior or
prototypical model be perceived and understood.
Then through a series of finite changes and
permutations, the original design concept can
be clarified, strengthened, and built upon,
rather than destroyed. This project was set up
as a scenario where the Smiths commissioned
an addition to their home that was originally
built in 1965, this was to be done without
destroying the original building.
Narrative
The Smith Family has commissioned the
design of an addition to their house on the shore of Long
Island Sound. The original house, designed
in 1965 by architect Richard Meier, has been widely
published and is internationally known.
Unfortunately, the Owners needs have change since the original
design, thereby warranting this
architectural intervention. The Owner specifically request that the integrity
of the original design be respected, yet
the new addition should have its own presence. The Smiths are a
close family and do many activities
together. They would really like a more comfortable family room, rather
than the lobby type living room in the existing
house. Mr. & Ms. Smith would like the outdoor area to have
a view of the Long Island Sound, and liked
the green roof idea.

The addition was done
onto the Smith House, which was built in the 1960s, by Richard Meier.
First the design was broken down into basic concepts such as,
circulation, structure, Hierarchy, etc..
I then decided to extrude the
circulation and the structural components to connect the new addition to the
existing building.
Now using the given
functions for scale I made basic 3D geometric shapes.
I then attached them to
the 3d model of the Smith house to come up with a few ideas for the addition.
I decided to go with
the image on the far left because I liked the way it fit with the building and
the terrain.
From there I Farther
developed the idea by reshaping, scaling, and put in the extruded components
from the Smith house.
After developing the idea
for the addition I designed a 2D floor plan for the addition based on the 3D
idea.
From the 2D I then constructed a 3D model of the floor plan, at the same time merging it with the existing building.
