Light Background Research
I researched
Frank Lloyd Wrights Johnson Wax Headquarters. This
National Historic Landmark was constructed from 1936 to 1939. Wright wanted to
put his own little flare into this building by using tree-shaped columns. Many
believed that this structure would not work, until it held 60 tons of weight
during a test. This new technique using steel-reinforced "dendriform" (tree-shaped) concrete columns to support
the ceiling was a great way to let light into the building. But to soften the
light penetrating through the ceiling so it would not disrupt the workers, he
used Pyrex glass tubing. For more in-depth information on this building overall

Narrative: Farmingdale State College wants a
non-denominational chapel located on the campus. The College wants this to be a
profoundly spiritual place that people of all faiths can worship and reflect on
lifes events. The College believes this can be
achieved by the creative use of light. The College has outlined a preliminary
program that consists of a main sanctuary, a memorial side, and a meditation
side. A site has yet to be selected on campus; the College is looking for
guidance from the Architect. The building should be integrated into the fabric
of the campus. The College explicitly requests the design not be symmetrical.
The client also requests that the building be located in a quiet part of the
campus in order to obtain peace.
