The Outcome:
I decided to
focus mainly on the path of movement through the house. When one enters the
home, they do so by going up a long ramp and are immediately pulled straight
into the home toward the glass walls. I continued this movement, using the fireplace
as a portal to the addition. In order to do this, I rotated the new building
about the three-story room and connected it by placing a large patio outside.
Here, the patio becomes the focal point for both, the original house and the
addition and helps to create hierarchy.
The
structure for the addition too, stayed the same. I rotated the structure about
the three-story room, creating a right angle between the existing house and the
addition. However, this time, I made the columns most noticeable from the
outside of the home.
I chose the
three story room in the existing home as a point of rotation.
I found that
if I rotated it enough, I could create a straight-line movement through the
home.
I used the
fireplace as the portal from the existing home into the new home, and connected
the pieces on only the first and second floors- the public and semi-public
floors.
The Grid
created guidelines for the addition.
PLANS:
Overall:
The purple beams
that extend from the beginning of the walkway to the extreme back of the home
not only outline the movement into the extension, but also create a more
defined and exhilarating entrance into
the home.
First Floor:
The Family Room
is placed on the first floor because of its public nature. Its placement allows
for easy access to the Kitchen, Dining Room and Patio.
Second
Floor:
The Workout
Room is on the second floor due to its semi-public nature. Although it is
easily accessible from the master suite, it is also easy to get to from other
places in the home-including from places in the original home. The Exercise
Room overlooks part of the Family Room below.
Third Floor:
The Master Suite
is a private room. It is accessible only from the staircase in the extension of
the home. It enjoys its own private bathroom, closet, and outdoor balcony.
