The heart of the mechanism to open and close the bridge is based on the idea of a car differential. Just like a car as the transmission turns the axile into the rear differential, it turns a set of gears which allows each side to turn. Both in reverse and forward.
Another concept of movement on the bridge is the mechanism that operates the hydralic pistons that lift the track that the road bed sits in.
