Form
and Function: Expression of Truth/Beauty
Project Statement:
This project shows a relationship between the function use and the aesthetic
design. The goal was to design a bridge structure spanning a total of 190 feet
across a body of water without placing footings into the water. It must allow a
30’ wide by 40’ opening to allow a boat to pass through. The structural
elements must only have a maximum length of 15 feet. A combination of pulleys,
gears and a hinge was used to make the bridge function and allow a boat to
pass. These functions helped transform the original prototype arch bridge into
a new structure.
