Chapel
of Notre Dame du Haut
Corbusier’s
chapel has these massive curved walls which give it a sculptural form. The
appearance might be confusing because the windows are so small. The purpose of
those windows which seem to just be punched irregularly in the thick walls give
a dim light to go with the cool atmosphere of the building. Light is also
enhanced by the indirect light which comes down from the three light towers.
All
the walls, the roof and even the floor curve taking the shape of the hill it
sits upon. Above the altar (picture below) are many pinhole size windows to
give off proper lighting.
The
small windows in this chapel give off the perfect amount of light. It is not
over-bearing but certainly not dark. It gives it the right atmosphere for those
seeking spiritual enlightenment.
