Project Statement

A chapel is going to be built on the campus of Farmingdale State College.  It is important to take into consideration the affect that sunlight will have on this building.  The location and orientation of the chapel play a major role in design.  After researching ways to control light inside a building, the location and orientation can be chosen and design can begin.

Public spaces will include the lobby, main chapel, side chapels, and outdoor chapels.  Private spaces will include the restrooms, clergy’s office, secretary’s office, conference room, and small library.

Sorting:

1. Main chapel

2. Side chapels

3. Outdoor chapel

Idea Formation

I took inspiration from Le Corbusier’s Notre Dame du Haut.  He implemented tall towers with skinny windows to let light in above each chapel.  He also used clerestory windows in the main chapel as well as these towers.  I used these types of light control in addition to some others in my project.

I began by sketching building cross sections with light paths.  I then created a few light boxes to see if different methods of controlling light would work or not.

Contextual Analysis

Preliminary Designs

The proposed building location is near the ellipse, some dorms, and some student life buildings.  This is a natural space located near a main circulatory path. This area seems suitable because it is near quiet areas but primary circulation.  It is not too near educational or administration buildings, but it is very near student life buildings and man-made spaces.  The entrance of the building will be on the northwest side and the sun will pass along the rear of the building.
