Light
The
purpose of this project is to understand how to use light when designing a
building, how it effects the spaces of a building and how to control this light
in a proper manner. Light is able to make a space feel more or less important,
larger or smaller, tranquil or upbeat. I have been selected to design a
non-denominational chapel located on the campus of Farmingdale State College.
The college has made it a point they want this building to be spiritual place
where all religions and faiths can reflect on life. Light can be used as a
creative tool when designing this chapel. This building should be integrated
into the look of the campus. The college has requested help from an architect
to pick a location on campus for the chapel. They have asked for a preliminary
set of plans.

Site Selection
When deciding on space to build this new chapel on
campus many factors were accounted for. Throughout the site analysis, we
divided spaces into certain genres in order to understand the campus. Deciding
factors were circulation paths for vehicles and pedestrians. We looked at where
the formal and non-formal spaces were located. After analyzing these factors,
we also took the seasons into account. Each season has their own specific times
of the day where Sunlight is more prevalent. We then decided that the best
location for this Chapel would be to locate it across from Thompson Hall,
Whitman Hall and next to Sinclair Hall. The oval space it borders is formal and
will provide an easy circulation path between buildings. The sunlight will be
able to effect certain portions and achieve the necessary goals of the
building. Another aspect we considered when it comes to lighting; if
surrounding buildings will compromise the amount of light the building intakes.
The closest building is Sinclair Hall; it is a two-story building and is south
of the new chapel. This could of caused some issues for the building to use the
light but it will not. The building is designed so that at noon time the light
will not be affected by Sinclair Hall. The sun is positioned higher in the sky
in the afternoon so the light will be coming down at a steeper angle, towards
the chapel.
