Preliminary Designs

Text Box: One of my first preliminary designs was incorporated into the arch bridge. But once I started to take pieces out of the bride to create enough room for passage, I started to run into problems. The problem with designing an arch bridge comes in when you start to want to make it move. If a section of arch bridge is taken out, the whole bridge wants to collapse. Compensation on one side of the bridge would have to be taken into account by changing the shape of the bridge so this way it could stand up. Another problem I ran into was making the bridge open up wide enough so a boat can pass. So in my design it lifted the roadbed about ten feet, and then through a gear system the roadbed was lifter the rest of the way through the cables. Once all the way up, the mechanism would then rotate upward to insure passage for the boat.
