LIGHT
Objective: This project examines the relationship
of function and light in architectural design.
Assignment: You
have been selected to design a proposed non-denominational chapel located on the
campus of SUNY Farmingdale. The College wants this to be a profoundly spiritual
place that people of all faiths can worship and reflect on life’s events. The
College believes this can be achieved by the creative use of light. The College
has outlined a preliminary program that is listed below. A site has yet to
selected on campus; the College is looking for guidance from the Architect. The
building should be integrated into the fabric of the campus. The College
explicitly requests the design not be symmetrical.
Preliminary Program:

Philosophy: After doing much research on light and
architecture and designing light boxes to test these examples of how to use
light I came up with these three examples. When designing this church I kept in
mind what direction the natural light of the sun was going to be traveling during
the day so that I could get optimum light usage. The main chapel was the most
important chaple in this church and then came the other memorial and meditation
chapels When it comes to light, in the main chapel the light is washing the
facing wall of the chapel. In the meditation chapel i have high even light to
bring a calm feeling to the room and in the memorial room I also kept the light
but not as even and a little more interesting.
Research: After doing much research on light and
architecture and designing light boxes to test these examples of how to use
light I came up with these three examples.

Site Plan:
I chose to put my building were dormitory students could access it and also of campus students
and the public would be able to access it off or Route 110.
This location is also in a nice and open space.
