Project 1

The objective of this project is to design and develop a movable bridge from a pre-existing bridge design, using concepts from household items.

Criteria:

190' bridge span

No piles in the water below

(Protect the snails)

Allowing a 30'x40' block to pass through

Road 10' above water

All members of bridge no longer than 20'

Bridge Prototypes

The Usk River Crossing in Newport, the Trenton Through Bridge in Utah, and the Tappan Zee Bridge in New York City

Inspiration

An adjustable wrench (worm gear and track system, rotation to linear movement), a telescoping magnet (sections that collapse into each other),

and a double hinged umbrella (multiple folding/rotating points).
