The objective of this project is to design a non-denominational chapel on the Farmingdale campus.  The philosophy of Le Corbusier was that every building should have its own character and it should be unique.  The design of the Notre Dame Chapel is unsymmetrical and yet it does not lack harmony.  Le Corbusier’s chapel of Notre Dame expresses ideas about volume, image, light and plan.  Light enters the chapel through small, carefully placed windows and through the roof-wall junction and illuminates the interior with the dramatic effect of light and shadow.  Unlike ordinary windows, Le Corbusier’s window designs consist of various size openings and angled.  The materials used to build the chapel works in unison with helping light penetrate through the building.

My philosophy is to select an ideal location for the chapel, where it is easily accessible and has nice scenery.  To make sure that the chapel fits, it’s important to analyze the campus site.  The chapel is oriented differently from other buildings on the campus in order to capture light.  Additionally, different styles of capturing light were used to preserve the peaceful environment where people can reflect on their lives.
