Story
The
Smith Family has commissioned you to design an addition to their house on the
shore of the Long Island Sound. The original house, designed in 1965 by architect
Richard Meier, has been widely published and is internationally known.
Unfortunately, the Owners’ needs have changed since the original design,
thereby warranting this architectural intervention. The Owner specifically
request that the integrity of the original design be respected, yet the new
addition should have its own presence.
Narrative
Since its design in 1965, by architect Richard Meier,
the Smith house has been revered as an architectural marvel that broke
boundaries, ultimately catapulting Meier to his peak popularity in the design
community. After much thought, the owners wish to alter the house, but keep the
integrity and personality of the original plans. In their later years, they
found a hobby in capturing the sunsets of the Long Island Sound from their roof
with their vintage camera equipment. Rather than taking a strenuous stroll to
the roof access, they wish to have their master bedroom annexed onto a new
addition, allowing them to walk out onto a stunning view.
