Project 1

Form and Function

The purpose of the project is to incorporate a function to an existing design. After researching and examining the components of bridges, as well as the movement of household objects, we had to develop an existing bridge to allow a large ship to pass through. This project will help us develop to an existing design for a function, while being able to maintain the integrity of the original design.

The criteria of this project is to develop a bridge to span across a 190 foot river with 10’ of clearance above the water. The bridge must incorporate the movement from everyday objects and can not be taller than 100 feet. The bridge must maintain the integrity of the original design but fulfill the desired function. The opening of the bridge must allow a ship 30’ wide by 40’ tall to pass through. No piles or structure of any type may touch the water.

3x3 Conceptual Combination Table

-Bridge could utilize umbrellas moving arms to fold upwards or fold in

-Difficult to fold in due to truss and difficult to fold upwards due to cantilever

- Bridge could spread out like an umbrella

-Continuous force downward could alter the movement.

Cables aren’t stiff enough

-          Bridge could fold up like a closed umbrella.

-          Arc won’t be as strong if split in half

-          Cables could be difficult to work with

-          Bridge split in 2 halves vertically and swings out towards land.

-          Middle component of wine opener could block clearance for boat.

-Could utilize towers as the middle component of bottle opener with the cables lifting roadway vertically.

-Cables will want to drop road because of gravity

- Road could open up and wing out horizontally towards land.

-Cables difficult to work with because of movement and gravity

-Arc won’t be as strong of cut or moved in any way

-Pulley could lift draw bridge

-Pulley would need to be supported

-Pulley could be incorporated into exisintg support cables

-Pulley could be incorporated into existing cable structure

-Difficult to lift road because of multiple cables

-Difficult to build support for pulleys while keeping integrity of bridge design

-No pre existing cables for pulley

-By incorporating cables, pulley could lift roadway

-Extra support for pulley
