Form and Function

This is the process of gathering of typical prototypes of bridges, and choosing three of these types to give direction in which the project will be going. Along with the choices of bridge prototypes, simple elements of movement were also chosen.

These two elements are the placed in a three by three (3x3) table. The process of reasoning collaboration and deduction begins here.

The prototype chosen via deduction is the ARCH BRIDGE.

INSPIRATION

The rolling bridge in London, designed by Architect, Thomas Heatherwick is a monumental feature as the movement of the opening portion of the pedestrian bridge.

TRANSFORMATION

The basic form of the arched bridge underwent a few transformation processes; a couple of these major transformations are listed in a bulleted format below.

·         Firstly, the fusing of the pulleys and rope systems gave the form a “bulkier” look and feel to the structure. At this point structural integrity was inspected and adjusted in order to hold and maintain holding the weight of the addition pieces to the 1”x1” member frame.

·         The second wind of transformation took place at the point of fine-tuning the movement of the moveable protion of bridge. This is the Widening to the “rear” end. This was done to enable the opened section to be brought between the main “arched” frames whilst being under the top “adjoining” web.
