Project 3 consists of designing a chapel on Farmingdale campus and choosing the most practical location in creating space and to harness light. Farmingdale state college is mainly a commuter school, but still has many students that dorm. The location I chose is between “The Mall” and Smith Hall. I chose this location because it is closest to the dorms on campus and it is in close proximity to educational buildings making it convenient for both commuters and dormers. Also this location has the most traffic and maximum sun rays due to no interference from trees or other buildings. The curve designs and deflection pool in my design take advantage of using the maximum light and deflection at all times of the day. I was able to design my chapel to capture as much light as needed knowing that Farmingdale’s campus sits at a 45 degree angle. My chapel also follows concepts of hierarchy, simple circulation, and usage.
