CONCEPTUAL IDEAS

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this project is to create an addition to the Smith’s house, while keeping the same techniques that Richard Meier used. The new building will follow the existing building’s contexts such as its structure, open vs. enclosed, and additive vs. subtractive, which will need to blend the new with the existing parts of the house.

NARRATIVE: “The work begins and ends with the sound of water”, has always been the motto of the Smith household. Growing up on the water is a huge part of the Smith family. The family is passionate about boating, fishing, and anything else that involves the sea. Mr. Smith is looking to add an extension to their home that gives the family room a greater view of the long island sound.

HIERARCHY: The family room will be the most important space out of the four new spaces to be designed. The family room will have a cylinder shape to distinguish it from the rest of the spaces. This room will be two stories tall overlooking the water with an outdoor deck.
